Rod-cone interaction in the after-flash effect.

چکیده

The brightness of a flash of light is reduced if it is followed a short time later by a second flash presented to a different region of the retina. Interaction between the rod and cone systems is examined in this after-flash effect for after-flash delays of from 300 to 1000 msec. The data indicate that rod-cone interaction in the effect can occur, and that in the dark-adapted eye the after-flash effect due to rod stimulation can lag behind that due to cone stimulation by about 100 msec. Key Chords-rod-cone interaction; after-flash effect; metacontrast

Interaction between rod and cone systems in dichoptic visual masking.

The brightness of a brief flash of light is reduced by the suitable presentation of a second flash in an adjacent region of the visual field. This making effect (metacontrast) can be induced dichoptically, that is with the test flash presented to one eye and the masking flash to the other. By a suitable choice of wavelengths and conditioning field, the test flash may be arranged to effectively ...

Rod threshold: influence of neighboring cones.

Changes in rod increment threshold at the center of a desensitizing background disc were measured. Sensitization by an annular surround was shown to depend more upon the surround’s effects on cones than on rods. This demonstrates a rod-cone interaction in which the activation of cones in the vicinity of a test flash influences the detection of that flash h.r rods.

Mesopic background lights enhance dark-adapted cone ERG flash responses in the intact mouse retina: a possible role for gap junctional decoupling.

The cone-driven flash responses of mouse electroretinogram (ERG) increase as much as twofold over the course of several minutes during adaptation to a rod-compressing background light. The origins of this phenomenon were investigated in the present work by recording preflash-isolated (M-)cone flash responses ex vivo in darkness and during application of various steady background lights. In this...

Effects of prolonged darkness on light responsiveness and spectral sensitivity of cone horizontal cells in carp retina in vivo.

Light responses of cone- and rod-driven horizontal cells were recorded intracellularly from opened eyes of intact, immobilized carp and the effects of prolonged darkness on these cells were examined. When the retina was left in the dark, responses of cone horizontal cells to a moderate test flash presented once every 10 min gradually and steadily decreased in size (dark suppression effect). Fol...

A comparison of three techniques to estimate the human dark-adapted cone electroretinogram

The dark-adapted cone electroretinogram (ERG) is difficult to isolate because of unwanted rod intrusion. We compare dark-adapted cone estimates derived using three techniques. The first uses the cone response on a moderate rod saturating background to estimate the dark-adapted cone response. The second uses red and blue flashes to tease apart cone and rod responses (red-minus-blue technique, [I...
